Most charity events ask you to show up for the cause first and have your fun second. The Pup Cup quietly flips that order – and it’s rolling into Sewell this weekend.
This Saturday, September 19, Choice Inline Arena hands its rink over to the Pup Cup Iron Man Roller Hockey Tournament — a five-hour charity event that brings together 12 teams competing across two skill divisions.
But the hockey is only half of it. Woven right through the competition are 10 animal rescue organizations, a crowd of adoptable dogs, special guests, vendors, prizes and prediction games. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the games and the giving happen in the same building, at the same time — no separate gala, no velvet rope around the cause.
Instead of building a formal fundraiser that people have to decide, in advance, to attend, the Pup Cup folds the mission into a day plenty of folks already want to be part of.
- You can come because you play
- You can come because your kid or your buddy is on one of the teams
- You can come simply because good roller hockey on a Saturday sounds like a solid way to spend the afternoon
- You can come because you love dogs
And no matter why you go – somewhere between periods you will probably find yourself scratching the ears of a dog who needs a home.

Behind the whole thing is Leadt Hockey, the South Jersey hockey group organizing the tournament. They are teaming up with the Animal Welfare Association and nine other rescues to pull it off.
The full roster of beneficiaries is a who’s-who of regional rescue:
- All Mutts Matter Rescue
- Animal Adoption Center
- ACCT Philly
- Animal Welfare Association
- Belly Rubs Senior Dog Sanctuary
- Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center
- Match Dog Rescue
- Philly Bully Team
- Southern Comfort Animal Rescue and South Jersey Rescue.
These are the groups doing the unglamorous, everyday work — rescuing, sheltering, healing and rehoming animals, and promoting spay/neuter, humane education and the human-animal bond.
Getting 10 of them under one roof is a clever idea. A typical fundraiser shines a light on a single organization. The Pup Cup turns the afternoon into a kind of open house for the entire local rescue world. Someone might walk in knowing only the Animal Welfare Association and walk out having discovered a senior-dog sanctuary, a foster-based rescue, or an adoption center a few towns over that they never knew existed.
For small nonprofits all competing for the same volunteers, foster homes and donations, sharing one big crowd beats fighting for a dozen small ones.
So what’s the point of it all? Straightforwardly: proceeds and awareness from the day support all 10 groups. Dogs get seen – and, with any luck, adopted. Rescues pick up donations, new fosters and fresh volunteers. A champion gets crowned. And a whole lot of people who didn’t plan on “attending a rescue event” leave having done exactly that.
It’s a low-pressure, high-fun way to do some good. You don’t have to be a hardcore hockey fan or a self-identified rescue person to have a great time. Bring the kids, cheer for a team, play the prediction games, browse the vendors, and say hello to a few very adoptable dogs. If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged member to the household, this might be the afternoon you meet them.
