The only home Walt Whitman ever owned is a modest two-story house in Camden, and it’s exactly what you’d hope it to be. Whitman spent the last eight years of his life here, and the house is preserved largely as he left it — furniture, books, his writing materials, and the bed where he died in 1892. It’s a National Historic Landmark and a New Jersey State Historic Site. The guides are passionate about Whitman and will tell you things you won’t find in the brochure. Camden doesn’t always get the respect it deserves as a destination, but this is a genuine literary pilgrimage site.
