A 155-foot Doric column marks the spot where Washington placed his artillery on the high ground above Trenton on December 26, 1776 — the morning after the famous crossing. The cannon fire from this position was decisive in the Battle of Trenton, trapping the Hessian forces and preventing their escape. You can take an elevator to an observation area near the top for views of downtown Trenton and the Delaware River. Five bas-relief panels around the base depict the crossing and battle scenes. It’s a surprisingly powerful monument that puts you directly at the tactical center of one of the most important battles in American history.
