Built in 1758 to house British soldiers during the French and Indian War, the Old Barracks is the only remaining colonial-era barracks in the country. On the morning of December 26, 1776 — the morning after Washington crossed the Delaware — Hessian soldiers were quartered here when the Americans arrived. The building survived, and today it’s a remarkably intact piece of the 18th century sitting in the middle of downtown Trenton. The collections include period weapons, furnishings, and artifacts, and the living history programming is among the best in the state. A must for anyone who takes the Revolution seriously.
