The Ballantine House, attached to the Newark Museum of Art, is one of the finest Victorian mansion restorations in the northeastern United States. John Holme Ballantine, son of Newark brewing magnate Peter Ballantine, built this Romanesque Revival showpiece in 1885. The house is preserved room by room with extraordinary period furnishings, and the contrast between the opulent family quarters and the servant spaces tells the full story of Gilded Age domestic life. The museum’s art and natural history collections are world-class in their own right. Newark deserves more credit than it gets as a cultural destination.
