This is where the Continental Army hunkered down through two brutal winters of the Revolutionary War. Washington’s headquarters at Ford Mansion still stands, giving you a real sense of what it meant to keep an army together when everything was falling apart. The Jockey Hollow encampment area is a short drive away, where soldiers lived in hand-built log huts in conditions that were, frankly, worse than Valley Forge. The park covers over 1,600 acres and is the country’s first national historical park. Don’t skip the museum — the collection is genuinely impressive.
