This Federal-style mansion in Morristown was home to George Macculloch, the man who conceived the Morris Canal. Built around 1810, the house contains one of the most significant decorative arts collections in New Jersey — fine furniture, silver, ceramics, and paintings assembled over three generations of the Miller family, who owned the house after Macculloch. The highlight for many is the extraordinary collection of original Thomas Nast political cartoons — Nast, who invented the modern image of Santa Claus and the Republican elephant and Democratic donkey, lived in Morristown for years. The gardens alone are worth the trip.
