Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood is one of the most authentic and continuously inhabited historic immigrant districts in the United States. Portuguese, Spanish, and Brazilian immigrants built a community here that has sustained itself for over a century, layered on top of earlier waves of German, Polish, and other European arrivals. The neighborhood takes its name from the railroads that once surrounded it on all sides.
