General Washington used this elegant Georgian house as his headquarters during the winter of 1779-80, the worst winter of the Revolutionary War. The Ford family graciously (and strategically) offered the home to the Continental Army, moving themselves into two rooms in the back. The mansion is one of the finest preserved Revolutionary-era homes in the country, and the museum next door houses an exceptional collection of artifacts from the Morristown encampment. Ranger-led tours bring the story to life in a way that’s hard to match. This is serious American history, and it’s right here in Morris County.
