David Felt built a complete mill village in the Watchung Reservation in the 1840s — houses, a store, a church, even a school — to serve his papermaking operation. At its peak, Feltville housed 175 workers and their families. When Felt retired in 1860, the village was sold, revived briefly as a summer resort called Glenside Park, and then quietly abandoned. Today the buildings still stand in various states of preservation within the Watchung Reservation, reclaimed by the forest but still eerily recognizable. Union County has been slowly restoring the site. Walking through it feels like finding something that wasn’t meant to be found.
