Elias Boudinot was one of the most important figures of the founding era — president of the Continental Congress, signer of the Treaty of Paris, first director of the United States Mint — and this elegant Georgian mansion in Elizabeth was his home. It’s also where George Washington stopped for a reception on his way to his first inauguration in 1789. The house dates to 1750 and is preserved as a State Historic Site. Elizabeth doesn’t always get credit as a historically significant city, but as the first capital of New Jersey and home to figures like Boudinot, it deserves a second look.
