The Black River and Western Railroad in Hunterdon County, NJ is a hidden gem worth putting on your list. This 501(c)(3) organization offers a variety of rides ranging in price from about $16-$20 per person, as well as many special events throughout the year.
Running between Flemington and Ringoes, this historic shortline railroad has been operating for over 50 years. The 70-minute round trip takes you through rolling farmland, past wildlife, and over a trestle bridge soaring 40 feet above the river. The vintage coaches date back to the 1920s. They are the real deal.
The experience is run entirely by volunteers who genuinely love what they do. That passion shows.
Special events run throughout the year, including an Easter Bunny Express, Great Train Robbery ride, Halloween specials, fall foliage runs, and a Santa Express. There is something on the calendar for every season.
At Ringoes Station, a small museum inside a train car covers the railroad’s rich history, and a gift shop rounds out the stop. Well-behaved leashed dogs are welcome on board at the conductor’s discretion.
This is not a flashy attraction. It is an authentic, unhurried experience that connects you to a piece of American history right in your backyard.
