Oktoberfest didn’t start with beer. It started with a wedding!
In 1810, Munich threw a five-day party for Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese – horse races, public feasting, the whole city invited. The crowd liked it so much they asked for a repeat the next year, and two centuries later, that royal reception is the biggest beer festival on the planet.
New Jersey has been in on the tradition for generations. Germania Park in Dover has been pouring steins since 1895, and the Garden State is home to roughly a million residents with German heritage — enough to fill more oompah bands than you’d think.
From boardwalk beer halls to backyard breweries and smaller fundraisers, here’s where to pull up a bench, order a pretzel the size of your head, and toast the season.
