The Great Whaleboat Races
Event Details
In honor of Capt. William Marriner’s daring 1778 whaleboat raid, the Matawan Aberdeen Historical Society is teaming up with Matawan Borough, Aberdeen Township, Keyport Borough, and the Keyport Historical Society for a Revolutionary-inspired showdown on Lake Lefferts.
Three towns. Three whaleboats. One legendary mission.
Teams from Matawan, Aberdeen, and Keyport will race across Lake Lefferts to a floating dock, “capture” their town’s mayor, and row back to the shore — recreating the daring spirit of Marriner’s real raid to capture Loyalist New York City Mayor David Mathews in 1778.
The first team to return their mayor and hoist their town’s flag on the banks wins the coveted Golden Oar Trophy, which can then be proudly displayed in their town hall!
Beyond the race, expect a full day of family fun: live music, food, kids’ activities, and plenty of hometown pride on the water.
Which team are you rowing for — Aberdeen, Keyport, or Matawan? ![]()
