Somerset County does that mix of farmland, small-town charm, and serious food and events better than almost anywhere in Jersey. Somerville hosts one of the longest-running criterium bike races in the US every Memorial Day and backs it up with a downtown full of great restaurants. Far Hills is horse country, the Far Hills Race Meeting steeplechase is a fall tradition, and the surrounding hills are genuinely beautiful. And Duke Farms in Hillsborough is 2,700 acres of trails and open space that’s free to visit and somehow still underrated.
