Essex County is anchored by Newark, New Jersey’s largest city and one of the most underrated food destinations on the East Coast. The Ironbound neighborhood alone is worth the trip for the Portuguese restaurants, and the Newark Museum of Art is legitimately one of the best in the state. Head a few miles west and Montclair offers a completely different vibe: a walkable arts town with great independent shops, the Montclair Art Museum, and more good restaurants than you can get through in a weekend. Essex has range.
